What Are Challenge Coins?

Basically, challenge coins are made from metals like bronze, silver, gold or platinum but there are instances that a combination of these metals are used to create one. But not all the time these coins are round because there are coins made to be triangular in shape while some are specifically made for the meaning it projects. Generally speaking, they have a logo in front and might have raised emblem on back and front.

A particular date, slogan or name of the unit is being used for the coins and given to the members of military. Say that the coin is given after a successful mission or as award for what seems to be an impossible task, then this is commemorated.

Challenge coins were given first in the military and while the stories are varying for each person, the most common is that, military personnel are challenging others to produce coins. Believe it or not, the United States Air Force or USAF is the branch of military that started this tradition. They’re carried by those who’ve flew right into enemy territories and considered among the bravest and most courageous.

Because of this, the challenge coin is sometimes referred to as honor coin as well. They are being carried by members of the Navy, Army, Air Force, Marines, Coast Guards and among others. As a matter of fact, the coin became so popular that a lot of civil servants these days have one. These coins also have department that the person is hired whereas in military coin, it has squadron or division emblem. These coins are also given to various members of organizations these days to acknowledge special occasions.

The members of Air Force acquire the coins after they have successfully completed their basic training. If the officer training is selected upon graduation, new officers get a coin. To keep the spirit and significance of these challenge coins, it is known that the rules of the said challenge are only to the military unit and the ones who received it in the unit as well. Challenge coins are well known to boost morale of the holder.

There are rules that have to be followed when carrying the coins. The value of challenge coin is immediately nullified if it is defaced by any means similar to boring a hole in it, wearing it as a necklace and so forth. Different units are not allowing members to bring the coins in their wallet instead, a common way of carrying it is in the pouch, worn around the neck.
